The Campus
LOCATION: The campus consists of 88 acres of rolling wooded hills covered in native trees of pine, oak, gum, and cedar. The land was purchased in 1929 by the Downtown Kiwanis Club of Little Rock with a donation by Mr. Preston Pfeifer. Mr. Pfeifer's donation was made in memory of his father, Mr. Joseph Pfeifer, a local businessman. The Downtown Kiwanis Club was concerned about the boys roaming the streets and used this means to provide a place for them to spend time out of the city. With the Little Maumelle River running down one side, fishing and swimming were natural events. Even now campers can see deer, turkeys, geese, owls, and other wild life.
CABINS: Seven rustic rock and log cabins provide housing for over 100 persons. The cabins have electric heat and wood burning fireplaces for winter and air conditioners and ceiling fans for summer. Built by the CCC in the early 1940's these cabins have withstood the heavy use of hundreds of boys and girls.
BATH HOUSE: A common bath house provides ample shower, lavatory and toilet facilities. Although there are other facilities on the property, the bath house is the primary place for personal hygiene.
DINING HALL: The dining hall/kitchen combination provides a certified restaurant-type food facility. Hot, well-balanced meals for campers and staff are provided by a cook with the help of other staff members. Meals are based on current food pyramid requirements and the recommendations of the National School Lunch program. In addition, food is provided for the cook-out events that take place every week.
SWIMMING POOL: The swimming pool is certified by the Arkansas Department of Health. It is the oldest operating private pool in the state. Campers have the pleasure of a swim between Memorial Day and Labor Day. A Red Cross certified lifeguard is on duty any time the pool is open.
BALL FIELD AND BASKETBALL COURT: A two acre ball field for playing baseball and other group games allows plenty of space for several groups. There is also a full-size basketball court. Athletic equipment is available for a variety of activities to encourage campers to be physically active.
CAMP SITES AND HIKING TRAILS: The areas of the campground that are more natural provide beautiful camp sites with views of the surrounding landscape, the Little Maumelle River and the camp itself. Numerous hiking trails add a special touch to activities for campers. When hiking, campers learn many things about nature from the identification of flora and fauna to the ecological care of the area.
PAVILION: This rustic rock and log open-air pavilion, equipped with fireplace and toilet facilities provides a perfect place for activities while maintaining the feeling of being outdoors. Many events make use of this facility from barbeques to arts and crafts.
LITTLE MAUMELLE RIVER: This small river is great for fishing or beginner canoeing. The lucky and quiet nature lover may see deer, ducks, turkeys, beaver, and other wildlife. Campers may also see special plants growing along the edge, find places for solitude and watching the sunsets.
ROPES COURSE: A rope course that includes both low and high ropes provides the opportunity for both physical and emotional skills. Campers learn that the ropes course challenges them to develop leadership skills, confidence in themselves and their peers, communication and teamwork, goal setting and problem solving skills, and learn to trust themselves and their peers. Several staff members are certified in ropes course management and training and they provide encouragement and supervision in a very popular activity.
